Fungal Infections of Skin & Its Treatment

There are several types of Fungi which can infect our skin. The most common are as under:-

1. Tinea Corporis (Ringworm of Body)

There are ring shaped rash with slightly raised edges. It is quiet itchy & can spread on whole body or to others also. It can be treated with Salicylic Acid or Anti Fungal ointment or cream.

2. Tinea Pedis (Athlete’s Foot)

It affects the feet mostly between toes & causes burning & stinging sensation between toes or on the sole of feet. It can spread to nails, groin or hands.

3. Tinea Cruris

This infection is seen in groin & thighs. There is intense itching & rash. It can spread to buttocks also.

4. Tinea Capitis

When fungal infection spreads to the skin of scalp & associated Hair Follicles it is called Tinea Capitis. It is to be treated with Antifungal Shampoo & sometimes with oral anti-fungal also. It can cause local bald patches. There is scaling & itching. There may be pain in the bald patches.

5. Tinea Versicolor

Tinea Versicolor is the fungal/yeast infection of skin that causes small oval patches of discoloration. It is caused by a fungus called Malassezia which is naturally present on human skin. The patches can be itchy or flaky. It is more common hot & humid climate.

6. Cutaneous Candidiasis

Cutaneous Candidiasis is caused by Candida fungi in the area which are warm, moist & poorly ventilated. Typical areas are under the breast, in the folds of the buttocks, like diaper rash. It causes red rash, itching & small red pustules.

7. Tinea Unguium (Onchomycosis)

Tinea Unguium (Onchomycosis) is the fungal infection of nails. The nails become brittle, break easily, discolored & thickened. Sometimes the nails have to be removed for treating it.

How to Prevent Fungal Infection:-

1. Avoid warm & wet environment

2. Do not sweat heavily, keep good hygiene.

3. Clean your skin & keep dry.

4. Do not share your clothes, shoes, towels & bedding.

5. Avoid skin to skin contact.

6. Do not touch animals which may be infected.

7. Boost your immunity.

Treatment of Fungal Infections:

1. Adopt all the measures enumerated to avoid fungal infections.

2. Use some anti fungal ointment & apply by rubbing it like Miconazole, Clotrimazole ointment or cream. Apply Clotrimazole powder or Ketoconazole shampoo it.

Precautions: Apart from treatment following precautions are necessary.

1. Keep skin clean & dry. Maintain good hygiene.

2. Boost your immunity.

3. Wear loose & breathable garments & shoes to allow ventilation.

4. Stay away from animals that have signs of skin infection.

5. Do not walk barefoot in common places.
